From Toledo, Ohio, let’s meet Amy & Wayne!
Love at First Pub
Through a simple chance encounter in a Dayton, Ohio pub in January 2009, Amy and Wayne crossed paths and began to fall in love over a couple of beers. At the time, Wayne was an active-duty Civil Engineering Officer in the Air Force while attending graduate school and Amy was a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Miami Valley Hospital. It was a Saturday night and Wayne had spent all day with his Dayton Rugby buddies; even though he was exhausted, one of his close friends convinced him to go to dinner–and eventually–The Pub.
Wayne remembers making eye contact with Amy across the room, recalling “I was mesmerized by Amy and could not take my eyes off her. Luckily, she didn’t think I was crazy, and we spent the rest of the evening chatting.” He eventually worked up the courage to officially ask Amy out, and the two instantly hit it off. They were married the following year, on August 21, 2010, at the Dayton Art Institute. Less than a year later, the newlyweds moved to the Osan Air Base in South Korea, where they welcomed their daughter, Lauren.
Working Around the World
Before and during the early years of their marriage, Wayne had an extensive Air Force career and served as a Space Systems Maintenance Technician with training assignments at Lackland and Keesler Air Force Bases, in addition to an operational assignment in the fourth Space Warning Squadron at Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico.
He was selected to attend the United States Air Force Academy in the summer of 1996 where he endured their rigorous academic and military curriculum to ultimately earn his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Regular Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 2001.
He then served in various Civil Engineering Squadrons across North Dakota, South Korea, and England, as well as a deployment to Afghanistan in 2006, where he served as the Kabul Area Engineer supporting facility and infrastructure projects for the Afghan National Army and Police. In 2008, the Air Force sent Wayne to grad school in Dayton, Ohio, where he earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management.
Amy worked as a pharmacist for 25 years, and–as a result of the family moving for Wayne’s military career–she worked in a variety of different hospitals as a clinical pharmacist, having to change jobs every one to two years. When the couple was stationed in South Korea, Amy bid on a contract and was awarded the position of on-base pharmacist where she worked as they raised their new daughter. Toward the end of Wayne’s military career, Amy landed a remote job with Humana doing prior authorization reviews for Medicare. Although her passion was in hospital pharmacy, she enjoyed the balance and stability working from home provided her and the family.
Then, Voodoo Entered the Picture
Wayne and Amy first learned about the Voodoo Brewing Co. Franchise while actively looking for locations to open a rotating craft beer tap house when Amy came across some of our marketing online. The couple decided to research Voodoo Brewing and what we’re about as they sent an inquiry form and began chatting with Bill Wotocheck about the franchise business opportunity. Bill was as straightforward as always and, based on the literature and videos he shared, Amy and Wayne began to immediately picture themselves as Voodoo Brewing Franchise Owners!
After learning more about us, Wayne and Amy fell in love with the overall vibe and eclectic designs of our existing beer pub franchise locations, with the pair appreciating the artwork and attention to detail of every product label alongside the excellent taste of our craft beers. They were also impressed by the hand-crafted cocktails, unique mocktails, and the encouragement each Franchise Owner receives from corporate to partner with local distilleries and wineries in order to help the business further grow and connect with the local community. To top it all off, Amy and Wayne found the food to be fresh, unique, and something they would be proud to serve.
Getting to Know Voodoo
As the couple got to know Voodoo Brewing and our franchise business model more, Wayne found that they liked that they would get to sell fantastic craft beer without the overhead and headache of brewing it themselves. They were highly impressed by the fresh, scratch-made food and hand-crafted cocktails that required minimal freezer space in each pub. Finally, the couple loved the European model we’ve adopted that wouldn’t require they need servers in their daily operations, instead allowing for runners and the usual beertenders to take care of their customers.
In meeting our Voodoo Brewing franchise corporate team, Amy and Wayne appreciated the eager presentation they received at Approval Day. Each team member’s professionalism and knowledge was a huge contributing factor in their decision to sign and bring a Voodoo craft beer franchise location to Toledo, Ohio. Knowing that our professional and supportive team had their back, Wayne and Amy were comforted and empowered to take the next step in their business ownership journey.
Everyday Life as a Family
As a family, Amy, Wayne, and Lauren enjoy going for walks with their dog Tiger, playing golf, and socializing with friends and family, with Amy appreciating the cooking, photography, and homemaking she can do in their current home, especially after having moved around frequently while Wayne was in the Air Force. Together, Amy and Wayne are involved in the Sylvania Rotary, where they participate in the Wednesday night bowling league and Monday night golf outings with their fellow Rotarians. Today, the entire family is also active within their St. Joseph’s Catholic Church community.
Wayne grew up playing football, basketball, and baseball, then went on to play Rugby while in college at the Air Force Academy and for the All-Air Force Rugby team during his military career. While his rugby days are behind him, Wayne still continues to stay active by participating in the F3 Toledo group, which stands for “fitness, fellowship, and faith.” F3 is a small workout group that not only workout outside, regardless of the weather, but also gives back to the community by volunteering and serving those in need. The couple’s daughter, Lauren, keeps up with the family’s active ways by participating in swimming and volleyball in the CYO sports program.
Business Ownership Dreams
While Amy and Wayne are new to owning their own business, the couple has been on a quest for over three years to find the best business opportunity for their family’s future and financial goals. Throughout their search, they still found that Voodoo Brewing Co. was the first franchise business model they got excited about and could really visualize themselves in the everyday role of Owner-Operators!
When we asked Wayne what he thought would make them successful in running their own Voodoo beer pub franchise location, he reflected on the effective team he and Amy made with their strengths and weaknesses consistently complimenting each other. As a military officer, Wayne learned that success was only possible when you surround yourself with a successful team. This will start with Amy and Wayne, but they know that they won’t succeed without an entire team of great people to help them run the day-to-day business operations. Together, the couple plans to relentlessly take care of the individuals they bring on board to ensure they build the team to help their Voodoo beer pub franchise prosper in their community.
Setting Voodoo Brewing Apart
At Voodoo Brewing Co., we strive to be the anti-cookie cutter, anti-corporate culture brewpub franchise. Since we make sure every location is unique to its neighborhood and individualized to the Franchise Owners themselves, it helps each beer pub location become a familiar-feeling beacon in its community. We collaborate with each owner on everything from decor to the food menu to make sure family, friends, and strangers can look forward to coming together to share a great craft beer and delicious meal in a unique atmosphere.
Amy and Wayne were drawn to the Voodoo family because we never compromise the quality of our craft beer or food just for the sake of selling more in a day. The couple loved the relaxed atmosphere and efficient brewpub model we designed to help each and every Franchisee succeed, in addition to the commitment our corporate team provides to ensure each Franchise Owner is supported every step of the way. Plus, with our corporate team handling the brewing, Amy and Wayne will be able to focus on running and enjoying their new Voodoo Brewing Co. beer pub franchise!
